Peddling Your Passion
The other day while I was driving around town listing to the radio I heard an interview with Billy Mays. You know the infomercial guy! I found his story to be unexpected and very interesting and I had the idea to write this post. My thoughts were centered on the crap that Billy Mays sells, but hearing him talk about how much money they rake in with his commercials was almost sickening.
Billy Mays is not passionate about the stuff that he sells, he is passionate about sales. He loves what he does and he is pretty darn good at it too. Billy Mays could sell anything, which leads me to this question;

Everyone is passionate about something and we typically have a desire to share those passions, but the trick is getting people to ‘buy in’. Billy Mays gets people to buy in all the time, even at 2:00am. So what is his secret? Here lets watch one of his videos…
If you had a minute and thirty seconds could you share some useful information with someone about your passion? Sure you could! There isn’t a day that goes by that I am not talking with someone about my passions. Everywhere I go I am presented with opportunities to discuss certain theories or things that I have learned about relationships. We are always dealing with relationships, in every aspect of our lives we are creating, maintaining and improving our relationships (we should be anyway).
What ever your passion is, you are probably talking about it more then you realize. I know I do! In fact I have caught myself boring the heck out of people because I am just so excited and rambling on and on. But Bill Mays, he doesn’t ramble on, he is enthusiastic and straight to the point. He has the ability to capture peoples attention get them thinking with with their emotions about how much they need the product and why they should buy it. Then he closes with a simple invitation to do just that, buy some.
I am sure that he doesn’t connect with everyone, but he connects with a lot of people. You wont be able to connect with everyone, but you don’t need everyone to ‘buy in’ to peddle your passion successfully. You only need a few people who have the same passions as you. People who are interested in the service or products you have to offer.
As far as any secrets go, well everyone claims to hold some huge secret to success that will make you millions and the truth is, everyone has the same secret, it is just delivered in a different box.
I don’t have a secret, in fact I have failed at more business ventures then I can count. However, I was never passionate about those businesses like I am this one! I have been to the bottom of the barrel I have seen first had what it is like to have no money in the bank. And I know the devastation that you feel every day because you are worried about how you are going to support yourself or your family. It never is as easy as everyone says. If it were, more people would be doing it, and more of the people already doing it would be more successful.
It’s hard work my friends, it really is, but if you are able to focus on your passions and not get caught up in the money or lack of, you will be successful! It will be real, your passions will be evident and your true desires will be about helping people and not about making money.
Successfully Peddling your Passions is about finding those people that are like you and helping them become better and more successful.
